Was skeptical at first with all the brands and products that are on the market (many I've tried). The Pony Protector is by far one of my few favorites for an insect repellent that ACTUALLY works especially in Texas summers.” ~  Eli

A SOLID alternate between your arsenal of fly sprays!

UNPOPULAR STANCE: I listen to the horse, first! And...then do what aligns with my lifestyle. Some horses are highly allergic to certain chemicals, some people are highly allergic to certain chemicals...natural or not.

Flies are BAD this season, we know!  We wanted to share some key ideas about Fly Repellents. We use "1-HR" as an honest amount of time we've found the repellent to work.

#1 Environmental factors: Factors like temperature, wind, and rain can affect how well the spray works. Studies have proven that what works well on a grey or palomino horse in NE might not be effective on a bay horse in TX. Horses and fly populations are different.

#2 Relief: We all have different expectations of RELIEF from flies. Some horses are in stalls 75-100% of their life, some are in pasture 100%, some 50%/50%.

#3 Human health/horse health: We all have different concerns and lifestyles. We disclose ALL ingredients. Different types of fly sprays can have different levels of active ingredients, which can affect how well they work, and not all ingredients have to be disclosed on the label.

#4 From ORKIN: "Natural remedies can be effective in controlling flies, although they may require more frequent application and maintenance compared to chemical solutions. Essential oils like eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint have been known to repel flies."

#5 MYTH: Apple Cider Vinegar in a DIY spray (we've made this mistake!) Apple cider vinegar is used to ATTRACT flies to capture them, not REPEL.

So, are Pyrethrin & Permethrin chemicals safe?

  • Pyrethrin and permethrin are both classified as “Restricted Use Pesticides” by the EPA, which means that their use in products is restricted to certified manufacturers. That said, they are considered relatively nontoxic to mammals (including humans). Because pyrethrin is derived from a natural source (the chrysanthemum flower), it is readily biodegradable when exposed to oxygen, moisture, and sunlight and so is not considered particularly dangerous to the environment.
  • Permethrin also breaks down fairly easily and is not associated with any significant environmental issues. It should be noted, however, that pyrethrin is highly toxic to fish and moderately toxic to birds and bees, and permethrin is fatal to cats and fish and highly toxic to bees and other beneficial insects, so take care when using fly sprays containing these compounds.
  • Permethrin is a synthetically produced insecticide that, like pyrethrin, works as a neurotoxin, overstimulating the nervous system on contact.

The 1-HR Pony Protector is a gentle, natural fly repellent made with Peppermint, Lemongrass, and Rosemary oils to keep those pesky flies away without intense ingredients.

For sensitive geldings

I have one that flinches when sprayed but this didn’t seem to bother him. And the little pony doesn’t mind it as much as regular fly sprays. I like the smell. So I guess we all like it!

Yes! Your sensitive ponies are exactly why we created the 1-HR Pony Protector. It makes me smile that it helped your boys. Thank you for sharing - so appreciated.

One of the best fly repellents!

Was skeptical at first with all the brands and products that are on the market (many I've tried). The Pony Protector is by far one of my few favorites for an insect repellent that ACTUALLY works especially in Texas summers.

Hi Eli, I'm so happy to hear that it offered relief in Texas. Some days nothing works here in Colorado. I hope you continue to use it in your arsenal of fly sprays. I found it helpful for all seasons here. There was a couple of HOT/DRY weeks where I think it just dispersed too fast to stay on the coat. When it does have time to sit, insects aren't keen on the scent :)

Love this stuff!

My dad bought this for me for my birthday as I have three beautiful mares! The flies can get bad here in North Dakota with the humidity, and I’ve been trying my hand at DIY fly spray since the chemical stuff is expensive and seems not effective. My DIY attempts have not been great, though.

When I first used this Pony Protector, I could not BELIEVE how great it smelled!! I also was incredibly surprised at how well it worked!! It kept the flies away for a couple days before I had to reapply!

We are now moving into chilly Fall and the flies have moved out, but I will ABSOLUTELY be ordering several bottles for Spring and Summer next year.

Thank you SO MUCH for such an awesome product!!!

Oh Aly, I'm honored that you shared this and a photo of your beautiful pony! Fly repellents are one that I'm committed to improving... with gentle ingredients. It's tricky with different environments, different flies, and different horse colors! I have days where the product works incredibly and days where the flies laugh out loud no matter what I use. I do believe we need to change things up and rotate different products. Thank you!

My high hopes came crashing down!!!

I was so excited to try this product with high hopes that it would naturally repel flies… However, I absolutely saw no difference after I sprayed it on. The flies were just as bad as before with no relief. I also thought it funny that a product only works one hour. here in Arizona I would be out there spraying your small bottle of fly spray which only lasted me three days on my three horses . Great marketing . thou!!!

Hi Jennifer, we wanted to offer a 'neem-free' option for those horses that are allergic to Neem (which is in our 3-in-1 Pony Perfector) and we call it the 1-Hr Pony Protector for those times when you need 1-hr of relief without using harsh chemicals. We have no intentions on misleading anyone on what it is. We find it to be great in our area and many others find it to be helpful, but we understand that in some areas it might not be as helpful. I'm sorry you were disappointed. It's a 16 oz for those who use it as an alternative to their other sprays. We've experienced that NOT all sprays (chemical or not) work ALL the time.

The Best Fly Spray

I seriously love this stuff. My sweet mare is sensitive to sprays but this one works so well for her. I can spray it in her mane and around her face without worrying about chemicals. It also doesn’t make her eyes water like other products do. I have been to clinics and there is not one fly on my horse with this product. I will be a lifelong supporter!

Look at you two! I'm thrilled it works well for you and your sweet mare. We're appreciative of you as a lifelong supporter and customer!
